Sutton Bank grants FELC $10,000 to assist schools with field trip expenses
TIFFIN, Ohio — Sutton Bank has awarded $10,000 to the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center, 194 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, to assist area schools with transportation and other expenses related to field trips to the center.
Each year, about 3,000 students learn about farm and rural life through field trips with themes such as Amazing Animals, Field Hike, Nature’s Grocery Store, Going Green, Nature’s Recyclers, Renewable Energy, Farm Habitat, Team Building, and science and agriculture career exploration.
FELC offers a large greenhouse, vegetable gardens and chicken/egg production where students can learn about food production under the tutelage of education staff members trained in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles. Students hike through row crop fields exploring agricultural life. They also enjoy nature in the woodlands and receive hands-on environmental education and demonstrations that promote nature appreciation and encourage sustainable living practices.
